The cross tab is a good way to visualize two or more variables simultaneously in compact rows and columns. It provides greater insight than single statistics and is easier to understand. Each dimension (rows, columns) of the cross tab can be determined by one or more variables resulting in one compound variable. For each pair of compound variables you can compute a summary value which is printed at the respective location. Each column represents multiple instances of a database or formula field grouped according to the group field associated with it. Each row appears on the left side of the table and defines the first criterion the cell must meet.
The summary fields are located in the cells, at the intersection of rows and columns. The value represents the summary (sum, count, and so on) of those records that meet the row and the column criteria. Each cell can contain one or more summaries. At the bottom of the rows a total row summarizes the total values for each column and for the rows is a total column at the end of that row. If the cross tab has more than one row / column sub total row / columns will be created after each group of row columns.
The user has control of the appearance and behavior of the cross tab and can customize for example gridlines, background colors, fonts, and much more.
